Your mobile subscribers are adopting 3G services but the traditional 2G subscriber base keeps growing too. You face the need to expand both network layers for more capacity and coverage to improve both the quality of service and availability. And with the onset of LTE, you must further develop your networks and rationalize your investments to deliver profitable services.

You need to grow your capacity today and re-allocate resources based on subscribers’ demand tomorrow. However, to remain competitive and sustain your network growth at reasonable investment costs, you also need to limit expenditures for new equipment, network management, site acquisition, site rental, installation, backhauling and power supply.

The Alcatel-Lucent Converged Radio Access Networks (RAN) is the answer. It has all the building blocks to evolve or renovate the network: SDR modules, unified O&M, mobility features and the META transport architecture.

Converged RAN: hardware versatility and software flexibility
Since 1999, Alcatel-Lucent’s multistandard solutions have allowed part of a system or equipment within a network to host several standards with a unique management and control interface. As a result, the Alcatel-Lucent Multistandard Base Station adapts to your requirements, as you move from GSM to GPRS, EDGE, GERAN evolution, W-CDMA, HSPA, LTE and so on.

SDR MC-TRX Module

Our Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology make it possible to use your network management center to remotely allocate the modulation of your choice in the radio modules. Whether GSM, W-CDMA, or LTE, your network reconfiguration will not require costly on-site intervention and you will enjoy the flexibility of reshuffling your network layers at will to adjust your resources according to your customers’ behaviors. You may also optimize your revenue by choosing to favor high-end services such as HSPA or LTE rather than traditional voice on GSM.

In short: Alcatel-Lucent pioneered the multistandard approach, and our SDR developments are a way for you to optimize your resources and accelerate your deployments. With Alcatel-Lucent Converged RAN, you not only protect your GSM, W-CDMA or CDMA investments, but also ensure a simple path as you evolve your network to LTE.

Quantifiable benefits
Protecting our customers’ investment is at the heart of our Converged RAN strategy. An Alcatel-Lucent 2G/3G site can provide you with 40 percent TCO savings compared to the deployment of a macro solution, thanks to reduced equipment requirements, limited installation services, rationalized power consumption and optimized maintenance services.

The right solution, whatever your environment
Alcatel-Lucent delivers Converged RAN whatever your environment, since our modules are available for a wide set of frequencies and are compatible with any type of cabinet: indoor, outdoor, compact, distributed. You can extend, upgrade or even renew your infrastructure with a limited number of modules and reuse your existing assets to their maximum.  For any site configuration, Alcatel-Lucent Converged RAN offers a suitable and optimized solution.

2G/3G Mobility
The Alcatel-Lucent Multistandard Base Station features innovative 2G/3G mobility mechanisms you won’t find with any other supplier. Our allocation algorithms ensure traffic is intelligently distributed across 2G and 3G carriers. As a result, you can efficiently control the load distribution between 2G and 3G and anticipate cell congestion, rather than waiting for an actual handover rejection.

Refarm 900 MHz
Alcatel-Lucent’s RF modules will allow you to fully exploit your current and future licenses, thanks to their wide range of frequencies: 700 MHz, 850MHz, 900 MHz, AWS, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz, 2100 MHz and 2600 MHz.

Alcatel-Lucent’s ability to deploy 3G in the 900MHz frequency band is particularly noteworthy, as it will enable service providers to dramatically increase their coverage while at the same time significantly reducing the number of sites needed.

Tools for your global network operations
Rounding out our multistandard offer is a complete set of tools for managing your network, such as:

  • The Alcatel-Lucent OMC portal, an integrated management center that connects to existing management interfaces and allows your network to operate from a unique point, facilitating complex operational tasks and reducing your operational expenses.
  • Our eXtended Management System (XMS) which contains powerful tools to ease your global network operations: Radio Network Planning, Wireless Provisioning System, Network Performance Optimizer, RF optimizer, Wireless Quality Analyzer, Stability Data Analyzer...

Thanks to these tools, you can improve and accelerate your network configuration and administration workload, which can lead to a significant reduction of your OPEX.
