Improve end-user experience, network reliability and reduce expenses

The core of network optimization is simplification, efficiency and automation. As wireless networks mature, these attributes will become increasingly important.

How do you lower the costs of operating a network? How does reducing the manual configuration of equipment impact your bottom-line?

Alcatel-Lucent solutions comply with the latest 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standards while incorporating innovations from Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs—such as self-organizing and self-optimizing network (SON) capabilities. This can facilitate rapid deployment of networks, accelerate the introduction of services and ensure a network’s continual optimization.

We have a proven track record of SON leadership as evidenced by our contributions to standards and the maturity of our SON algorithms, some of which are adding clear value in commercial networks today.

SON represents a collective group of mechanisms that drive CAPEX and OPEX savings and further simplification for operators who operate next generation mobile networks. SON can:

  • Improve the network performance and thus end-user experience through adaptation to changes in user demand
  • Improve network reliability by performing automatic recovery during equipment failures
  • Simplify network operations through automated and automatic processes, significantly reducing OPEX through removal of repetitive tasks

Clearly, SON doesn’t need to stop on the wireless side. With the introduction of all-IP networks and MPLS/VPLS connectivity, significant resources will be called upon to perform accurate network configuration and address new bandwidth demands. Undetected routing topologies and MPLS path changes can cause havoc with networks, resulting in provisioning problems, service failures, and troubleshooting delays. A coordinated effort between SON and other IP management systems is imperative to ensuring rapid provisioning, high network availability, and customer quality of experience.

A specific instance of our leadership role is the 9365 Base Station Router femto cell deployments that already implement neighbor cell discovery and optimization—an important SON feature. The 9365 BSR femto cell is the first product to employ self-organization/optimization (SON). With SON, femto cells become plug-and-play.
