Best-in-Class Power Efficiency

When building mobile networks with the lowest power consumption needs, the base station is the first building block since the energy components of the base station site are dimensioned based on the base transceiver station (BTS) power consumption needs.

Power Consumption Metrics
The industry is still working to finalize the energy efficiency standards and metrics; Alcatel-Lucent is working in particular with ATIS-NIPP and ETSI in this area. To date the most significant metric to compute power efficiency is the power consumption needed to feed an entire BSS while carrying a data and voice traffic mix over a given coverage area.

Power Consumption per Coverage System and Traffic Covered

Low Power Consumption: Third-Party Certification
In India a lack of electrical power and frequent power outages is a common problem. As such, the power performance of mobile access products is a key criterion when building wireless networks. Telus International, an environmental simulation testing company, was asked by a Tier 1 Indian operator to conduct power performance testing of Alcatel-Lucent GSM BTS. The results placed Alcatel-Lucent in a superior position to its competitors and resulted in a large GSM expansion contract announced in 2007.

Reduce Power Consumption Up to 40 Percent
Alcatel-Lucent GSM BTS products consistently demonstrate best-in-class power efficiency and performance with power consumption levels 30 percent to 40 percent lower than competing GSM products. Alcatel-Lucent's power efficiency is a key differentiator in mature and high-growth markets.

But reducing the power consumption of the base transceiver station (BTS) would be meaningless if product capabilities were also reduced. Alcatel-Lucent aims to increase the power efficiency of the BTS, defined as the lowest power consumption for the maximum coverage and traffic load.

T-Mobile Testimonial: GSM Optimization
The German mobile market is characterized by fierce competition to provide the best voice and data services to a very demanding subscriber base with flat revenues per user (ARPU). T-Mobile, a leading mobile service provider, is completing a total GSM network renovation with Alcatel-Lucent solutions. This renovation enabled huge power consumption savings that helped T-Mobile afford its service differentiation objectives.

"The renovation of our BSS with Alcatel-Lucent equipment enabled us to benefit from power consumption savings in the range of 30 percent to 40 percent compared to previous equipment. This decrease of power consumption brought huge OPEX savings to help finance our service differentiation objectives. It also enabled us to help protect the environment by reducing the carbon footprint of our mobile service provider activities," said Frank Meywerk, Executive Vice President Network Development, T-Mobile Germany.
